The Our Lady of Fatima Processional and The Blessing of the Fleet
An annual tradition each Mother's Day Sunday, this beautiful Old World processional through Historic Hanover Square was started by the Portuguese
community in 1938 to commemorate the first appearance of The Blessed Virgin to three children near the
town of Fatima, Portugal on May 13, 1917. Hand-carved Brazilian Oak statue, with a crown of gold and
precious stones, identical to the statue in Fatima, is placed on a carved wooden shoulder carrier and
decorated with flowers. Parishioners of St. Francis Xavier Church process singing through the park.
The Processional begins promptly at 12:00 noon and lasts about thirty minutes.
The Blessing of the Fleet
This colorful Portuguese tradition blesses the brightly decorated
shrimp boats prior to the start of shrimping season each year. Since this begins at 3:00 p.m. at Mary Ross
Waterfront Park, you'll have time to take your own blessed mother a couple of blocks down Newcastle
Street for a wonderful and relaxing Mothers Day lunch!
Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration
This Fourth of July, bring yourself, your family and friends and join thousands of happy kids and
adults for free games, free watermelon, and of course free fireworks at Mary Ross Waterfront Park in
the heart of Historic Downtown Brunswick.
The festivities start at 7:00 p.m. and feature organized and supervised classic games like sack races,
tug-of-wars, horseshoes, various ball games, hula-hoop contests and more. Players compete for prizes
of delicious whole South Georgia watermelons. Can't win or just don't want to play but you still have
a taste for watermelon? Free slices are handed out all evening, compliments of the City of Brunswick.
The fireworks over the waters of the East River and Oglethorpe Bay start about 9:00 p.m. and last 30
minutes. A great, fun, family event that's sponsored each year by The City of Brunswick, Golden Isles
Arts and Humanities Association, and the Downtown Development Authority.
